NOTHING ATTEMPTED TO BRING ABOUT A CONFERENCE APPARENT DEADLOCK

GREYMOUTH, Thursday. Leading officials of the niine owners and unions were interviewed to-d'ay. It was stated that nothing further has been attempte'd by either side to bring about a conference. Appiarently tbe diffieulties will be unbridged unless the Government intervenes. The owners insist on the right of . engagement and dismissal of employees. Mi*. Purdy to-day refused to comment on the Auckland message yesterday giving a statement by Mr. R. L. Roberts. The miners declare that dismissals, when necessary, shall he decided hy a ballot by the miners. The owners definitely state that no compromise is possible on the right of engagement and dismissal, nor will the deletion of the minimum wage clause he entertained.
