GREAT NORTHERN TO-DAY

GOOD PROGRAMME TO CONCLUDE GREAT NORTHERN MEETING PROSPECTS^Nir FORM CLAREMORE, COPEY AND CALLAMART FOR THE STEEPLECHASE Since the racing on Saturday there have been several heavy showers, and this will make for a heavier course at Ellerslie for the concluding day on Wednesday of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting. This, 'taken in eonjunction with the fact that the higher scale of weights (the minimum for all flat handicaps is 8.0 froM now on), will serve to complicate all ideas of form as disclosed on " Friday and Saturday last.

The opening event to-day is the Tamaki_Steeplechase, and after Town Beauty's easy will in-the Hunt Cup he will be iri big demand. However, on the opening day Apaehe showed considerable proxnise, and so did Carlaris in the same event. Monetize was held (perhaps wrongly) by the judiciaries to have lost the Greenlane Steeples through lack of energy on his i'ider's part, but he was a tired horse. Now he is right up in the weights. Neil is a fair sort of jumper and has performed well over the hill. Probably the best will be Town Beauty and Apache, with Carlaris and Royal Reign next best. Orakei Hurdles There are quite enough horses engaged in the Orakei Hurdles, and Pull measure stands right out on his first and second to date at the meeting. There are quite a few that will make him go at the present wejghts, and among them are Paddon, Balloon, Patutahi, Biform, Fernden (who will need to jump better than hitherto) and Trowbridge (a brother to Wiltshire) . Most trouble to Full Measure may come from Appledore, Paddon and s Trowbridge. Y ork Handicap The largest field of the day is in the principal flat race, the mile York Handicap, but the well-performed horses should hold their own. Little Doubt ran fairly well in the Cornwall Handicap, and if he improves slightly he will have a good chance. Manawhenua had no chance, as the race was run on Saturday, but his win the first day was clear cut. Silvermine has only to leave the barrier right to he well in the picture, for he has run two splendid races after getting away badly. It is not encouraging to know that he was placed in the rogue's pen at the start last Saturday. Historic and Sunny Sky have the hardest part to do with their load, but they are in rare fettle. Protomint, King's Archer, Imperial Prince, Imamint, Lucy Rose and Jalldy Karo are lightweight possibilities. However, it is hard to go past Little Doubt and Manawhenua, with King's Archer and Imamint also possessing good chances. Winter Steeplechase The Winter St eepi er'u -se has attracted the same horses that took on the Great Northern Steeplechase less Mangani and Nassock, so it ought to produce another wonderful exhibition of jumping. The bracket, Make Up and Landmark, will find it hard, but Billy Boy, more quietly ridden, will go a better race, for he is the ideal jumper. Paris will have to improve, and Claremore ought to be a better horse this time. He was going like a winner half a mile from home, but his whnt of condition told, although he hung on to get third money. Nukumai was going great guns when he crashed half a mile from the finish, and the softer track will be in his favour. Lucess and Master Lu will go nicely. Callamart may be a better horse, but he was very distressed after the big Steeplechase. He and Copey may again fight out the issue, for they are both well t-reated. Slump appeals more than Kamehameha and Jen ,and Wiltshire, makinff a first appearance at the

meeting, has been under a cloud since running second to Nukumai at Hawera. Probably Claremore will reverse positions with Copey and Callamart this time, with Nukumai and Billy Boy possibly getting into the money. Not True to Form High Pitch, after his great run in the Great Northern Hurdles, was backed as a certainty on the following day, but he was interfered with at the second fence by a fallen horse and lost his rider. With a completed run to-morrow he will take some heating- in the Campbell Hurdles. Landmark and Make Up have lots of weight, which is sure to tell at the finish if they run. Luminary's form in the big Hurdles was too bad to be true, and Cruachan also failed to reproduce his best efforts on Saturday. Easterly has had three starts for three falls on this course, and that will not add to her courage. Arch Eagle and Nassock are improvers, and Full Measure, if kept for this, would take no end of beating. High Pitch is preferred to Full Measure (if started), and Cruachan and Nassock may be the best of the remainder. The sprint, the Visitors' Handicap, has another good field. Refresher might have been second the first day had his rider not let up on him, and the horse may improve on that effort The "Judge's" indicaticm of form for the final day of the Auckland Racing Cluh' s meeting at Ellerslie to-day is as follows: Tamaki Steeplechase. — Town Beauty, Apache, Carlaris. „ Orakei Hurdles. — Full Measure, Appledore, Paddon. York Handicap. — Little Doubt, Manawhenua, King's Archer. Winter Steeplechase. — Claremore, Copey, Callamart. Campbell Hurdles. High Pitch, Full Measure (if started), Cruachan. Visitors' Handicap. Refresher, Royal Bengal, All Humbug. Carbine'^Plate. — Protomint (if started), otherwise Seneschal, Imamint, Woodful. with his trainer up. Consent and Huntingdon are well up under the winter scale, and perhaps the real opposition to Refresher may come from near the bottom. Chromadyne (with further rain possible), The Tiger, Hamptori Park, ICing* Ford, All Humbug, Lord Val and Royal Bengal are all nicely placed. Royal Bengal, drawn out at number 15 in the sprint the first day, ran a fine race. Perhaps Refresher and Royal Bengal will do best, with All Humbug and The Tiger possibilities. The final event of the meeting, the Carbine Plate, is for amateur riders, and it is doubted if there will be enough gentlemen jockeys to go round. If Protomint is reserved for this, his second in the Cornwall indicates that he should he good enough for this field, with Seneschal, Imamint and Woodfull having chances in his absence.
