JUVENILE GARDENS

RESULT OF COMPETITION THIS YEAR DECLARED DISAPPOINTING ONLY TWO AWARDS The garden competition for juveniles promoted by the Rotorua A. and P. Association this year has not been attended with much success. In r.eporting upon this section of the show on Monday night the sub-committee in charge, expressed regret that the exhibits, in the majority of cases, were very disappointing. They felt that had there been more publicity either by enlisting the co-operation and sympathy of the teachers in the various sphools, or by leaflets among the school children, better results would have been achieved. Of the total entries 9£ per cent. fulfilled conditions and were quite up to expectations; 9S per cent. contained three different species of vegetables only; 47 2-3 had abandoned work after the initial stages; 33 1-3 had made no attempt at all. Only two prizes were allotted. G. Shooter, Rutland Street, came first, and Ronald Gawler, Hamurana, second. In the case of the first prizewinner the judges considered his effort very good-, overcrowding being the worst feature; in the second case untidiness was the worst feature. . A suggestion was made that in future competitions of this kind -a maxiInum area- of 100 'square feet be allotted instead of 144 square ft. If the competitor chose to extend his area he should be encouraged to do so. Help .could be given and. the plots visited early in the spring.
