— By Telegraph— Copyright).
GREYMOUTH, Monday. A general strike of the New Zealand coal miners has been carrjed by a tyro to pne majority in a Dominion wide ballot of the. unions, the ohject of the -strike being to resist the imposition of the coal owners new terms. The recent conference of owners and ' men in the North Island hroke down upon the refusal by the miners of the owners' claim to the unrestricted right to engage and discharge men. The position in the South Island is praetieally on the same footing, the men coritending that although some district have heen operating under the old agreement, the conditions imposed in the Northera districts are intende.d to extend to other fields. The miners' leaders state they are anxious for a conference at an early date. They desire, however, that the conditions shall not he laid down by the employers for the conference but that the old agreement may remain operative until repla.ced by a new agreement. If such conditions were granted, work could be at once resumed, but in the meantime cessation of work will probably commence at midnight.
