LAST WEEK'S GAMES IMPROVED PLAY

(By

Teams are gradually settling down for the season, and a higher standard of play has resulted. The closest game last Saturday was between Kowhai, holders of the championship for 1931, and the runner-up, High School A. Kowhai commenced with two players short, but despite this handicap they managed to secure the first goal. : They were fortunate in replacing these players within the first five minutes. The game was most exciting, with spasms of really good basketball, as both teams have excellent combination in the goal third, so far as fielding is concerned, but require practice in goal-throw-ing. The passing was good, but Kowhai proved a little superior in the first half of the game-, leading by one goal. In the second spell, both teams started off with a determination to succeed, and the play was a pleasure to witness. The- score was even throughout, but in the last few minutes High School managed to add two goals to their score in quick succession. E. Rushton, although inclined to over defend, played well for Kowhai, preventing her opponent on numerous occasions from seoring. Thegame ended: H.S.O.G. (A) 13, Kowhai, 11. Kiwi v. Ngongotaha It was disappointing to note that four of the Kiwi players dropped out, thus leaving their club not strong enough to field a team. On account of this Ngongotaha secured a win by default. Waratah v. H.S.O.G (B) This was a one-sided game as H.S. seemed to loose their usual dash. They are quite a god team, but last week were let down by the poor play of players who will not attend weekly practices. A Hawkins opened the score for Waratah by a brilliant goal from 12 feet out. At times the game was fast, but p'atchy. Sparlding passing rushes by both sides alternating with periods of fumbling and scrainbling for the ball. In the second half, Waratah had the- better of the game, their forwards working hard and shooting most accurately. High Sehool's goaler, J. Allen, played an outstanding game, but did not receive the assistance from her other two supporters to which she was entitled. The game resulted in a win for Waratah by 11 goals to H.S.O.G. (B), 4. Notes At meetings held recently, a constitution of rules for the governing of the association's affairs was produced and read to all members present. A copy was given to each delegato for her individual and team's perusal. The rules have since been unanimously adopted. It has been decided that the representative colours shall be navy blue and gold. A discussion has taken place regarding the correct height of goalposts, circumference- of hoops and weight of balls. As the discrepancy between the correct and present goals, etc., is so meagre, as not to affect the game in any way, it was resolved that the matter be left in abeyance in the meantime. An application from the High School to enter two teams for the Wednesday competition was approved. Miss Wilson has been nominated as a delegate for the High School teams.
