Committee Reports The Works Committee recommended, inter alia: That in view of the fact that other residents in Whakaue Strete declined to contribute towards the cost of the suggested bitumenising, no action be taken in'tho matte-r. The committee also recommended that the offer of the Public Works Department to maintain two main highways within the borough With their road planer or maintainer be accepted on stated te-rms. It was recommended that a new light be placed in Malfroy Road on the south side approximately seven chains to the east of James Street. It was reported that this loeality was badly lighted at present and there was a deep drain on the footpath just inside the fence line. The committee suggested that the petitioners with reference to the flooding of Fenton Street be informed that as there was no provision in the estimates for drawing up a scheme of storm-water drainage for the borough, no action could be taken until this information was available. It was recommended that the beautifying work at the south end of Fenton Street be put in hand as a relief work. The report was adopted. The General Committee reported that it had the question of fixing hours for the driving of stock through streets within the borough still under consideration. Arrangements were being made to arrange a conference with interested parties and enquiries were being made as to the possibility of obtaining the use of a stock holding paddock on the Old Taupo Road, adjacent to the borough boundary. The committee also reported having instructed the engineer to talce immediate steps to improve the water supply at the abattoir, and to sink a well on the new site at the abattoir to determine the possible flow of water from that source. Building permits to a total value of £179 10s had been issued since the last meeting of the council. The Reserves Committee recommended that the Citizens' Committee, in response to their letter, be advised that the ma'n area of tlr--reserve will not be laid down in grar: until it has been again cropped, owing to the n°cessity for eradicating gorse, etc. The committee also re commended that trees and shrubs to the value of npnrnximately £25 hpurchased immedhtoh' "or ulant'nq. in the Kuirau domain.

Mr. A. G. Thompson wrote askinp that trees and shrubs should be planted in King Street, and that propertr" holder* should be allowed to planl and lay down lawns in front of theb sections. He stated that they wew prevented f^om doiny this because :t dairy farmer required the road to drive his stock to and fro. Mr. Thompson enquired 'whether King Street was a stock road. The letter was referred to the General Committee. Mr. M. Roland wrote asking that the Council should supply labour and material to fill in the rough ground in front of his section in Pukuatua Street. Mr. Roland undertook to sow grass and keep the lawn in order. The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr. H. C. Frandi, who recently claimed compensation in respect of an accident sustained while employed on relief works and which the insurance company would not allow. He stated that he must look to the Council for compensation, to which he claimed he was entitled. Sympathy was expressed for the worker in question, .and it was deejded to investigate the matter further in order to forward his claim as far as possible. The district engineer, Publ'c Works Department, Tauranga, fo*warded a request that the Council'? . application for subsidies for the yeav 1932-33 should bo forwarded i o him in duplicate by the 1.5th June if possible. He called qittention to a circular forwarded on May 10, 1932, advising that the Council should not apply for provision for minor improve ments, such as cutting off of small points, widening of formation and sealed surfaces. etc., which must this year be entirely exeluded. The letter was received. Engineer's Report The borough engineer (Mr. F. V/. Bnnyard) reported that all main highway? hau henn malntained by motor grader and etmdry patching. Relief work had been carried out on the formation of streets between 4mohia and Ranolf Streets, and on 'he Kuirau Reserve, Sewerage Farm, Ohinemutu paths, Whakarewarewa village, beautifying schemes, Lake front, Town Belt north, Community Gardens (potatoes), pumping station, Malfroy Road, Aerodrome, publicity and amusement, street frontages, draining (open drains), farms, pauseum reserve, etc.
