TO-DAY'S MEETING
"The Judge.")
VERY SATISFACTORY FIELDS ENGAGED. FORM AND PROSPECTS. (Specially Written for the "Post"
by
There have been several meetings in the far south reeently, so that there is some form for backers to place reliance upon at to-day's opening of the winter fixture of the Dunedin Jockey Club. The course at Wingatui is sure to be Heavy and as the fences on the steeplechase track are stiff, there should be interesting struggles for supremacy. The fields are very satisfactory all round, being large in all but the principal handicap and the cross-country events. -Red Heckle seems to stand out in the Provincial Handicap, for he has only one pound more than he won with a fortnight earlier at Ashburton, and the two horses that followed him home are missing. The veteran Matu showed form reeently and he may again he prominent, although at the weights Calham looks a real danger. In the flat events horses that appear to possess good chances are Sailing Home, Gallant Fox, Brown Pearl and Winsome Hind. Form horses that will come in for keen support to-day are the following: — Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase: Valves, Heather Lad, Graball. Brighton Hack: Sailing Home, Consono, Colonel Cygnus. Provincial Handicap: Red Heckle, Rational II, Red Racer. Otago Steeplechase: Calham, Deportment, Matu. Tradesmen's Handicap: Gallant Fox, A1 Jolson, Lochlaggan. June Hurdles : Rameses, 'Captain's Gift, Royal Limond. St. Clair Handicap: Brown Pearl, Monastic, Thornton. Winter Handicap. Winsome Hind, Taboo, Town Major.
