— By Teldgriipb— Copyright).

P HIL ADELPHI A, Tuesday. Vines (United States) defeated Hopman (Atistralia) in the final singles for 6 — 3., 9 — 11, 6 — 2, 6 — 4. . Vines broke through Hopman's service in the first game, but the Australian returned the compliment, evening the score at 2—2. The American took the next four games, the Australian double faulting, driving out, and netting. Hopman showed extraordinary eapacity for attack in the second set. When the games were 3 — 3, the Australian tried to change the pace, alternating soft with fast shots badly eonfusing the American.

When both men seemed tired Hopman spurted, taking the nineteenth game to love and quickly running out, won the set. Vines won the third and fourth sets 6 — 4 each. During the third set Hopman was still attacking desperately and took the lead several times. However, Vines was obviously tiring but finally crashed through. After ten minutes, rest intermission, Hopman won the first and third games of the fourth set, and then Vines won three straight. Hopman rallied sufficiently to win the seventh and ninth, then Vines won the tenth and the match.
