LADIES' MATCHES MOUREA AND TANIWHA PLAY INTERESTING GAME AARD CUP TEAMS CHOSEN With the exception of the Taniwha versus Mourea mateh, the ladies' hockey games played at the Government Grounds on Saturday were uninspiring, lack of team combination being very evident. A fair attendance of spectators witnessed the matches, which were played in ideal weather. The position of teams after the completion of Saturday's matches is as follows: — Taniwha, 8 points; Shamrocks, 6; Mourea, Arawa and Hinemoa, 4; Mamaku, 2; Whippets, 0. Results at a Glance Hinemoa 1 goal, Mamaku 0. s Shamrocks 4 goals, Whippets 0. Taniwha 2 goals, Mourea 1. Hinemoa's First Win In the early stages of the game play was very even, both teams making frequent excursions into the opposing territory, but the backs of each team were generally safe. L. Thomas, playing as right wing for Mamaku, instituted many smart attacks for her team, but many good centres which she hit into the circle were not accepted by her inner forwards. The Hinemoa team, who were settling down to better team play, also made many attacks, but J.- King and Mrs. Lipsey, the Mamaku backs, were equal to the task, and half-time was called with no score having been registered. Mamaku were unable to hold their opponents to the same extent in the second spell and for a time the Hinemoa forwards hammered away at the Mamaku goal, success eventually rewarding their cfforts, R. Ipu finding the net. With a retaliation rush, Mamaku returned to the Hinemoa circle, and a practically sure chance of scoring, as a result of a fine centre by L. Thomas was lost through the inside left being out of position. Making strenuous efforts to puH the game out of the fire, Mamaku continued on the attack, but the inside forwards were weak and receiving no support from the halves, the attack was easily arrested by R. Hokepa and M. Herewini, Hinemoa fullbacks. No further score resulted from subsequent play and a hard-fought game ended in favour of Hinemoa. Hinemoa 1 goal, Mamaku 0. Closely Fought Game The improvement which has taken place in the Mourea team since the beginning of the competition was further demonstrated when the side met Taniwha on Saturday. From start to finish the game was full of thrills for the supporters of both teams, and the backs on both sides had plenty of work in keeping their opponents out of the circles. The first spell, at the end of which each side had netted once, was very evenly contested, the formation employed by the Mourea team worrying the Red and Black forwards, who wero frequently penalised for offside play. For Mourea, B. Tena was playing a great game at left fullback, and with hefty clearing shots, and sound defensive tactics, was a valuable asset to her team. T. Wharekura and R. Wharerahi were conspicuous in the Taniwha forward line, but offside play spoilt many of their movements. Taniwha had a slight advantage m play during the final half, T. Wharekura placing her team ahead with a good follow through shot soon after the commencement of the spell. Numerous attacks by Taniwha followed this success, but penalties for offside stopped many of these advances. B. Tena again rose to the occasion for Mourea and her placings enabled Mourea to attack, mostly per medium of the left wing, M. Walker, who was combining well with R. Ipu. The Taniwha backs, M. Morrison and A. Hato, were however equally as solid as those of their opponents, and M. Hani made some good saves in goal. In an effort to equalise Mourea staged a last minute onslaught on the Taniwha goal, but found the defence still sound, and Taniwha held their advantage until the end of the match. Taniwha 2 goals, Mourea 1. Drab Display Disappointing play was witnessed in the Shamrocks versus Whippet match, both teams being considerably below usual strength and the stickwork being generally poor. The advantage was definitely in favour of Shamrocks, and L. Morton and J. McKibbon were frequently called upon to clear the Whippet goal-mouth. Half-way through the first spell M. Raimona carried play into the Whippet circle and netted with a good shot following a capable save by J. McKibbon. Another goal came to Shamrocks soon afterwards as a result of a scramble in the Whippet circle, M. Raimona again netting. The second spell was also mainly to the advantage of Shamrocks, and only good defence by L. Morton saved Whippets on many occasions. Before the final whistle, however, Shamrocks broke through the opposition, and added two more goals to their total. An uninteresting game ended with Shamrocks' still attaclcing. Shamrocks 4 goals,0 Whippets, 0.
