ROAD CYCLING

SATURDAY'S RACE S. HOWE WINS CLOSELY FROM R. DAWSON FASTEST TIME TO N. HOWE The second road cycle race of the Rotorua Amateur Athletie Clnb's winter programme was held on Saturday over a course from the turn-off to Tikitere to the junction of Te Ngae Road and Fenton Street. The limit man, S. Howe, got away from the starting point at the ap— pointed time, 2.30 p.m., followed by J. MeCall, R. Dawson, H. Howe, G. Haycock, R. Henry and N. Howe. S. Howe put on the pace from the start and was hotly pursued by Dawson and McCall, with Henry coming up fast and reducing the gap between himself and H. Howe and Haycock. The scratch man, N. Howe, was con tent to hang on for the first three miles, but then began to gain ground on the other competitors. S. Howe was still leading by a good margin at the Abattoirs, both he and Dawson, the second rider, shaping well. At the Pumice Pit the only change in the positions was that N. Howe had overtaken Henry, H. Howe, Haycock and McCall, who were riding in that order. In an effort to overtake the leaders N. Howe clapped on the pace, but although gaining ground, the distance was too great, and he was obliged to ride into third place. Maintaining the lead which he held throughout the race, S. Howe was first past the finishing post, which he reached at 2.52 p.m., followed three-quarters of a minute later by R. Dawson for second place. G. Haycock was fourth and R. Henry fifth. Both first and second placed riders rode well-judged races, and finished strongly. N. Howe also rode well, but made the mistake of leaving his effort to overtake the leaders too late. Riding his first road race G. Haycock performed creditably and had a fine finish with R. Henry for fourth position. Fastest time for the distance was gained by N. Howe, off scratch, who finished in 21min. 30secs. S. Howe secured second fastest time, with 22min. The times and handicaps of riders follow: — S. Howe, 24min. handicap, time, 22min. ; R. Dawson (2min), 22min 15sec; N. Howe (scr), 21min 30sec; G. Haycock (llmin), 22min 45sec; R. Henry (lmin), 22min 14sec; H. Howe (lmin 31sec), 24min; J. McCall (2min), 23min.
