Rotorua Domain Boardi Th© annual meeting of the Rotorua Domain Board will be held in the Victoria Institute on Wednesday next at 7.25 p.m. Call to Chimney Fire A fire alarm reeeived at a little after 8.30 Iast evening, called the fire brigade to a blazing chimney in the living quarters behind the Cabin Tea Rooms in Tutanekai Street. The fire was soon got under control by 1 the nso of the first-aid apparatus. No . damage was done. Railway Builder's Death Mr. Ashley John Hunter, who died in Auckland on Friday in his 78th year, was at one time one of New Zealand's leading civil engineers. In association with the late Mr. James Stewart, Mr. Ashley Hunter was engaged in the laying ont of many of the railway lines in the Auckland Province, notably the Rotorua line and the Main Trunk line from Frankton to the King Country. Unsuccessful Hunt The Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club met at Messrs. Gee and Sons' property at Te Ngae on Saturday, and an enjoyable time was spent over excellent hunting country. The members were, however, unfortunate in not having a run, for although hounds worked well, not a single scent was to be found. The area had been exeellently prepared however, and the members coPtented themselves with schooling their horses over the jumps. A very aeceptable afternoon tea was later provided at the homestead, bringing to a close an unsuccessful though pleasant outing. ' Improved Electrical Supply Mr. H. J. Hardie, electrical engineer in charge of the Rotorua snpply, and his staff, were engaged yesterday afternoon coupling up new highvoltage feeder lines which, for severai months past, have been under constractioH between the Rotorua and Ngongotaha sub-stations. This . very neeessary work will make the supply to Rotorua through Ngongotaha yery much more secure and gpeatly facilitate any neeessary work on either of the high-tension lines. The present feeders were reaching their carrying capacity, and any repairs necessitated the cutting off of the supply to the town from the mairi station at Arapuni. The work was carried out to schedule, and tests carried out at 4 p.m. proved that everything was in order and the supply which had been cnt off in some portjons of the town was restored,
Women's Club Social A social afternoon will be held by the Rotorua Women's Club in the Tea Kiosk in the Government Gardens to-morrow afternoon, when an -address of special interest to women will he delivered. Visitors and ladies in business in the town are cordially invited. Particulars are advertised in this issue. Progressive Pairs Bowling Rotorua Tbowlers will prae^ieally close their season on June 3, the King's Birthday, when a progressive pairs tournament will be held on the Government Grounds greens. Local and visiting players are alike eligible, and entries may be made up to 9 o'clock on the morning of play, when teams will be made up among. the players present. Car and Truck Coliide A Government-owned motor-truek and a private car met in collision on a bend at about the six-mile peg on the Atiamuri Road early on Saturday evening. No one was injured. The car suffered extensive damage to the front wheels, axle, engine and chassis, and was later towed to Rotorua hy Bates and Sons' salvage waggon, The truclc escaped with only minor damage, and it is understood that after minor adjustments had been made, was able to proceed. Wliito Heron Seen According to reports in Wellington and Palmerston North papers, a white heron, possibly the rarest bird in New Zealand at the present time, has been observed on the Awapuni lagoon, which lies near the Awapuni Raceeourse on the outskirts of Palmerston North. The bird was seen by two schoolboys and also by Ranger T. Andrews, of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, who reported that some persons had apparently been shooting at the bird, as it was suffering from a broken leg. One of the Iast appearances of a white heron was on Lake Rotorua, when general indignation was caused by the shooting of the bird after it had been left unmolested for a considerable period.
