AUCKLAND,- Friday, Shortly before noon to-day, 1Wr. Dias, an acOolint&nt ehnjploy--«d by Messr^. Parkmsoif and Co., monumental masons, in Victoria Street, was assaulted ift the street by tv/6 nieh, who stole £106 in single £1 notes. The men then jrfiriped into a twoseater car and escaped. • Mr. Dias, who is aged 35 yearsy ■ was pinioned by both armS from behind and punched unmercifully by the second man. The money, which was in a bag, consisted of five bundles, eaeh containing £20, and six single notes, also about £6 in silver. This latter Was scattered 6ver ihe footpath as the two men ran to the car and joined a third, who had remained at the wheel. Dozens of people were in the vicinity, but the brazen robbery was committed so quickly that everybody was taken by surprise. The car number was noted. Mr. Dias was returning to the office from the bank, and when within a few yards of the office he saw a man coming at him. He was strtick a heavy blow on the side of the head, staggered and fell on the footpath, near the doorway of an empty shop. The men then pounced on him and seized the money. i He looked tip and Saw one man jump on the running-board of a car, ; which disappeared fast. | A number of people looked on j without helping, but it appeared they j were flabbergasted. ;i An attempt was made by a constable to pursue the car, but the van which he commandeered was too slow. Just after starting from the scene. of the robbery, the thieves' car eollided with another, and narrowly escaped sapsizing. Mr. Dias received medical attention, but was not seriously hurt.
