How far are car defects responsible for accidents? /interesting statistics on this subject are contained in a review by a United States insurance company just published of the causes of motoring accidents in the United States. More than 1,576,840 accidents that have occurred in that country during 18 months ended December 31, 1931 h,ave been analysed. It is stated that 90 per cent, of these accidents were due to some human error on the part of drivers or pedestrians.[ In an analysis of 1, 281,400 car accidents it is stated that 1,225,070 occurred in cars in apparently good eondition. Accidents were attributed to the following defects: — Defective brakes 18,290 Steei'ing mechanism defective 4,960 Glaring headlights 4,510 Burst tyres 5,880 Tail light out 4,140 Other* defects 3,610 One or both headlights out ' 5,640 Wet or slippery roads accounted for 9300 accidents.
