QUEENSLAND SUGAR AREA AFLAME. HOSTILITY TO ITALIANS. INNISFAIL, Saturday. So serious is the situation between British and Italians here over the formation of an Italian Defence Association that it is almost certain the British Community will form a coun-ter-defence body. Feeling is running high and a manifesi;o by the Italian community indicates that they intend to force the issue. They were informed by a Brisbane barrister that tha agreement between the A.W.U., the sugar producers, and the Canegrowers' Council is unlawful. The Italian manifesto declares that farmers 9 have complete freedom° in employing cane-cutters. Any farmer who is intimidated is asked to communicate with the "Defence Committee of Innisfail." The manifesto requests all gangers who have had theil contracts cancelled to report, "in order that the defence committee may be able to take appropriate action." The basis of the British campaign is that the sugar embargo has been given North Queensland to protect the "White Australia" policy.
