FURTHER TIME REQUIRED FOR PREPARATION OF MAIN REPORT EXTENSION TO BE GRANTED

WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In reply to a question to-day, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, stated that the National Expenditure Commission would he unable to submit its main report by the specified time, June 1, and that a further extension would be granted of about a month. The Commission was originally required to furnish its final recommendations by May 1, but when that Ifme did not suffice, the time was exterided until( June 1. The Commission is instructed to conduct investigations over a very wide field and it was recognised that the time allocated was brief, the Government's main object was to have the recommendations in time to enable early legislation tp he prepared based on them. The interim report published in March conta?ned recommendations for drastie cuts in the cost of administration of many branches and phases of the Public Service, but only one or two Government Departments were dealt with. The main report will deal exten sively with Government ofiices. The Commissioiiers arei Mr. G, Shirtcliffe (chairman), Colonel J. .Esson, Mr. A. Maclntosh, Mr. Jairi'es Begg and Mr. J. L. Griffin.
