six days' notice of reductions given NEW MINIMUM STANDARD
WELINGTON, Wednesday. ! As an important part of the new Public Works policy announced hy the Minister of Public Works, the Rt Hon. J. G. Coates, at the beginning of March, six days' notice has been J served on labourers in the employ j of the Department that their wages i are to be reduced from. 12/6 a day less 5 per cent, which they have been receiving to 10/- a day. Corresponding reductions are being made in the wages of the variaus classes of tradesmen employed by the DepartmentThe effect of the" move is to establish a new standard wage of 10/- a day and to place the Department's unskilled employees on the same footing as relief workers in the matter of pay, but not in respect of the number of days of employment per week. They will continue to work a full week.
