DRASTIC ACTION

Failure to comply with instructions of the headmaster of the Geraldine District High School that pupils who attended a dance in the Town Hall must leave by 9.30 o'clock, unless their parents remained, led to the suspension of three students. The dance followed the fancy dress ball of the primary department of the school. One boy, who had been given permission by his parents to stay at the dance, and who was under the charge of a neighbouring family, declined to leave, as did another boy, who claimed that' as he had paid for admission he was entitled to remain. As the result, three boys were informed next morning that they were suspended until the headmaster received the necessary authority to expel them. Three prefects, two of whom attended the dance, then handed in their badges, stating that they had been guilty of the same offence by staying at the dance, and that they were in sympathy with their class mates. Protests were made by one of the parents to Dr. G. W. Curtis, who is the acting chairman. During the afternoon the headmaster removed the suspension, and returned the badges to the prefects, with the remark that although he did not agree with the boys over. the affair, he wished them to return when the school re-opened, and that he would let the matter drop at that.
