TANIWHA BEAT ARAWA AFTER AN EVEN GAME

WHIPPETS LOSE TO HINEMOA The ladies' hockey matches for the Robertson Cup were continued at the Government Grounds on Saturday, before a fair attendance of spectators. The game between Taniwha and Arawa attracted most attention and despite the final result was fairly evenly contested. Play was not so even in the other game, between Hinemoa and Whippets, the advantage being generally with the Hinemoa side. The results of games was as follows: — Taniwha 5 goals, Arawa 0. Hinemoa 4 goals, Whippets, 1. Mamaku beat Shamrocks by default. Taniwha v. Arawa Arawa won the initial "bully" and made a lightning attack on the Taniwha goal, but bad shooting resulted in the ball going "dead" and a twentyfive was ordered. Winning the bully Taniwha settled down to attacking play, T. Manarapa being prominent in good right wing play, but was generally unsupported, enabling R. Martin to clear. G. Allen (nee Rogers), who was making her first appearance on the field this season, instituted _ attacks for Arawa which recovered valuable territory, but her play did not approach the form shown by her during past seasons. The Arawa right wing, W. Wickliffe was also playing soundly, but several good centres of hers were not accented by her inside for-

wards whose circle work cost them many likely chances of scoring. Combined work by T. Manarapa, L. Hatu and T. Wharekura took play into the Arawa circle, the last named. netting with a hard shot. Further play up to the end of the spell was even and interesting, G. Allen narrowly missing a score for Arawa and R. Manahi (Arawa goalkeeper) making good saves in the face of numerous attacks by the Taniwha forwards. Taniwha one, Arawa nil. Second Spell Play in the second spell was more to the advantage of the Taniwha side and the Arawa backs were given plenty of work in clearing their territory. I. Wharekura and T. Manarapa on the right wing for Taniwha were prominent in spirited attacks into Arawa territory and between them scored four goals, the first named player securing three of this total. A dangerous position was created for Taniwha when their goalie had a "penalty bully" ordered against her for an infringement in clearing, but she was equal to the occasion and cleared her circle. The poor circle work of the Arawa forwards again lost them many scor- ' es, and although their deficit was five goals the score was not a fair indication of the merits of each team's play. t Taniwha 5 goals, Arawa nil. Mr. A. C. Watts was the referee. Hinemoa Win The Whippets team found the play of the Hinemoa side too strong and at the end of the match were obliged to acknowledge defeat by a margin of three goals. The play of Whippets was disappointing throughout, there being no cohesion between backs and forwards, and any forward play being generally of an individual nature. Numerous openings were made by the centre forward, M. Black but on each occasion she was unsupported, her efforts consequently being valueless. The fullbacks, E. Bettridge and L. Morton were generally safe as also was the goalie, J. McKibbon, her one fault being an infringement which cost the side a goal as a result of a "penalty bully awarded against her. Had the Hinemoa forwards displayed any semblance of combination I the final result would have given the | team a larger margin than three ! goals. Despite the fact that they j dominated the play throughout the | forwards were generally seen to be bunching badly and many passes sent to the wings found the players out of position. . The fullbacks, Rangi Hohepa and P. Ratana, served their side well an defence, but the halves were generally too far behind the forward lme, and were also indiscrimmate in placing their passes. The final result of the game was as follows: Hinemoa 4 .goals, Whippets, 1. Mr. Carr refereed.
