FRENCH PUBLIC GRAVELY DISTURBED BY TRAGIC LOSS CAPTAIN'S REPORT QUESTIONED
— By Telegrapli — O pynght).
Rec. May 22, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Saturday. Public opinion throughout France is gravely disturbed hy the tragic loss of the Georges Philippar. There is a most insistant derfiand for a searching inquiry into the cause of the fire and the handling of the. situation after the fire Was discover ed. This will undbubtedly take place when Captain Vieq and the ship's officers return. Captain Vicq's statement that flames broke. out simultaneously in several Widely different points, is regarded as mysterious, especially as the naval engineers who built the ship deny the possibility of simultaneous short circuits, o£ even a short circuit at all. The Messageries Maritime offices at Paris are still haunted by friends and relatives anxious about the missing. When the newspaper correspondents drew the attCntion of an official of the Messageries Maritime in Paris to the criticisms by passengers he l*eplied that he could only refer them to Captain Vicq's report detailing the measures taken to save life. He emphasised the passage in the report relating to the rapidity of the spread of the flames.
