SURPRISING DEFEAT OF THE LOW HANDICAP PLAYERS TWO CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS The first and second rounds of the Rotorua Ladies' Golf Club's annual open championship' tournament were played yesterday uirder excellent weather and golfing conditions. The semi-finals between Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Collinson, and Miss Wilkinson and Miss Pudding, will commence this morning at nine o'cloelc. The final will be played this afternoon. Play yesterday was again not up to expectations, and there were several surprising reverses. In the championship second round Miss Wilkinson, an eleven handicap player, defeated the ex-New Zealand champion, Mrs. Guy Williams, 3 up and one to play. Another unexpected victory, in the same round was Miss Dudding's defeat of Mrs. J. M. Wilson, the Auckland provincial champion, by one up on the nineteenth. Miss Pudding had a narrow victory in the first round also when she took Mrs, Shroff to the ninpteenth before the ducision could be made. In this round, however, she was badly outclassed by the low handicap player Mrs. Collinson, who won by eight up and six. Bogey Handicap The scores returned in the bogey handicap match played in conjunction with the first round of the championship were disappointing, no one
in either grade being able to compete with the "Colonel." The winner of the A grade was Mrs. J. M. Wilson, two down, and the B grade was won by Mrs. Finn, three down. Medal Handicap Some good scores were returned in the second medal handicap played yesterday afternoon. The A grade wasfwon by Mrs. La Trobe Hill, 85 13 — 72, and others near the top of the list were: — Miss Wilkinson, 85 — > 11 — 74; Mrs. Stanley, 92 — 18 — 74; Mrs. Collinson, 81—4—77 ; Mrs. Ferguson, 83—5—78; Miss Pudding, 92 — 12 — 80; Mrs. Blundell, 98 — 16 — 82; Miss P. Hartley, 99 — 17 — 82; Mrs. Parata, 97 — 12 — 85; Miss Hewitt, 98—12—86; Mrs. Guy Williams, 91—4—87. The B grade of this competition was won by Mrs. Seales, 104 30 74. Others near the top in the scoring were: Mrs. Worthington, 93 ■ 19 — 74; Mrs. J. Sherriff, 97 — 22 — 75; Mrs. Kelly, 108—29—79; Miss Clark, 109 — 30 — 79; Mrs. Livingstone 119 — 29 — 90. In the putting competitions Mrs. Ferguson won on Tuesday after a tie with Mrs. Parata, and Mrs. Halford tied with Miss Corlett yesterday. The winner has not yet been decided. Pyer, 2 up; iVL.--Pudding defeated Mrs Shroff, oue up at 19th; Mrs J. Wilson deLated M.v Tapper, 8 and 6. Second Round Mrs Ferguson defeated Miss II •- witt, 4 and 3; Mrs Collinson defeated Mrs Butler, 8 and 6; Miss Wilkinson defeated Mrs Guy Williams, 3 and 1; Miss Pudding defeated Mrs Wilson, one up at 19th.
