SUSTENANCE NEEDED SUITABLE WORK CANNOT BE FOUND BY LOCAL BODIES PROBLEM IN AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, V/ednesday. "What are we going to do with the 600 or 700 men, physieally unfit for camp or for hard town work, who are applying to the Labour Department every day?" asked Sir George Richardson, at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committee. "No jobs can .be found for them, but something must he done. Are they to he given sustenance?" The Mayor, Mrl G. W. Hutchison: "I think we should ask the Minister for Employment what he is going to do about them." The Labour Department representative said some local bodies could not find work for the men. The Mayor ^ "Married men are still 'being coerced into camps. 'I say 'coerced and I mean it. I think it is absolutely wrong. I am certain that 75 per cent. of the community would be against it." 1 It was decided to ask for a return of the numher of men physieally unfit. The Mayor mentioned that some men who had been sertified as fit by a department doctor had produced certificates from other doctojs that they were unfit. These men were denied work. It was decided to write to the Minister.
