MAORI DROWNED
DEATH FROM HEART FAILURE in well known bathing pool. 70 YEARS OF AGE. While bathing in the well known warm pool off the Atiamuri Road on 1 Saturday afternoon, an aged Maori, Wharerehi Hohepa Naihi, succumbed to heart failure and his body was later recovered from th'e pool. Naihi left his home at Horohoro settlement about 3 o'clock on Saturday af • - noon, with the intention of visiting the pool for his usual bath. When he failed to return, a search was made, and his cloth'es were discovered lying on the edge of the bank. A uative who dived into the pool was successful in recovering the body. Naihi was 70 years of age and had been receiving medical attention for h'eart -trouble. An inquest was '-nducted yesterday by Mr. S. L. Pateeson, S.M., coroner, who return :d a verdict of accidental death by drewning. The pool in question, which is situated in the open country about seven miles from Rotorua and opposite the Horohoro settlement, is a favourite bathing resort for the Maoris of the district. It is in places over six feet in depth and varies in temperatuce. On very few days, however, is the temperature too hot to permit bathing. The body was brought to Whakarewarewa, where a tangi is being held.
