MEETING OF UNION

INFORMAL REQUEST FOR MATCH receivedIfrom WAIROA DRAW FOR NEXT SATURDAY i i The weekly meeting of the Rotorua Rugby sub-union was lield last evening in the committee's room in Tutanekai Street. Mr. T. S. Robertson presided over a good attendance of members and delegates. Mr. Haupapa, one of the referees at Arawa Park last Saturday, reported that on No. 1 Ground two players mistook the five-yard line for the goal line and thereby threw away scores. Ile asked that the matter be considered. - Mr. Haupapa also reported that the puhlic would not keep off the sideline and had even wandered on to the field. The same thing had happened on the other fields. Several members thought that the only way to prevent this was to place a row of seats inside the fence; the occupants would see that no one stood in front of them. Mr. R. G. Webb said that people crowding the line made it very difficult for a referee who, if he could not see the players, had difficulty in beinj, sure of his deeisions. Several members of the union were appointed ground stewards to control the public. Mr. R. Mason was asked to see that the goal-line and five-yard line were attended to before next Saturday. Inciting Rough Play Objection was raised by Mr. Webb to the action of some of the specta'tors who, he said, were inciting the players to be rough. The chairman explained that any person caught doing that sort of thing was liable to be prohibited from entering the football ground. This had had a salutary effect last year. Several members spoke in praise of the clean game played by Hikuwai and Whaka clubs last Saturday. A sub-committee was set up to go into the question of suitable badges for the union officials so that they might he distinguished. It was pointed out that a badge would giv" officials authority on the football ground during matches. The chairman reported that the president of the Wairoa (H.B). union had made a verbal request for a match with Rotorua representatives at Wairoa and liad offered a guarantee of £30 to cover expenses.
