ROAD CYCLING
N. H.OWE WINS RACE FROM NGONGOTAHA TO ARAWA PARK ALSO MAKES FASTEST TIME The first cycle road race arranged by the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held on Saturday over a course from the Ngongotaha football ground to Arawa Park. Seven riders faced the starter. Although the race was timed to start at 2.30 p.m. the first rider, H. Howe, did not get away until 2.40 p.m. owing to a misunderstanding as to the starting point. The other six riders left at minute intervals in the following order: R. Dawson, N. Howe, R. Henry, A. Grithffis, S. Howe and J. Spencer. H. Howe was leading over the hatchery hill, with R. Dawson and N. Howe coming up fast, but the leader fell when coming down the Fairy Springs hill and was passed by Dawson and N. Howe. H. Howe was unhurt and remounted. N. Howe caught Dawson at the Kawaka Point road and at Duffy's corner had increased his lead still further. N. Howe was still riding strongly at the Malfroy Road corner and the only change in the positions was that R. Henry, A. Griffiths, S. Howe, and place. A big lead had been gained by N. Howe at Ranolf Street corner which he pass'ed two minutes ahead of R. Dawson at the Kawaha Point road vals by Henry, H. Howe, Griffiths, S. Howe and Spencier. Turning into Grey Street N. Howe was still in the lead and Henry passed Dawson for second position, but had no chanee of beading off N. Howe, who reached the finishing point at eleven minutes past three, gaining both the race and fastest time for the distance. The winner was accorded an ovation by the large crowd present at the park, as also was R. Henry, who rode into second place. The finishing order of the other riders was, R. Dawson, A. Griffiths, S. Howe and J. Spencer. N. Howe, who performed so well in winning the race and gaining fastest time against a stiff breeze all the way, and is the youngest rider in the club, gives promise of developing into a fine rider and in a year or two should be capable of racing the best of cyclists. He won the E. C. Adolph Cup in the past summer evening meetings of the club by consistent performances. Henry and Griffiths are also promising riders and should, with training, make a name for themselves. Due to a cramped style, S. Howe does not get the best results from his efforts. The rest rode well but showed the need of serious training. The thanks of the club and riders are due to' Messrs. Ford and Shaw, traffic inspectors, to all those who assisted in patrolling the corners, and to the many motqrists who very courteously allowed the riders the right of the road during the race. The individual aetual times and handicaps of the riders follow. N. Howe (2min), 19min 2sec; R. Henry (lSmin) 20min 30sec; R. Dawson (Imin), 22min 32sec; A. • Griffiths (scr), 20min 17sec;' S. Howe (2|min), 22min, J. Spencer (l^min), 21min 55 sec. ___ ___
