WEST COAST MINERS OWNERS REQUESTED TO CONFER WITH UNIONS STOPPAGE IF NOT GRANTED
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
GREYMOUTH, Sunday. The West Coast Miners' Council yesterday discussed the ultimatum from the coal-owners organisation j that from to-morrow the* mines in the j district will be operated under new j terms, including what are describad I as drastic reductions in the rates of wages, also yardagie, timbering and other rates, the lengthening of the wet-time hours, and the- re-introcluc-tion of trueking by the miners. The council resol'ved to recommend the union at "stop work" meetings tomorrow to reject the owners' 'terms, and to ask instead for a conference in order to come to an agreement. ' intimation to this effect has been sent to the coal-owners. The miners point out that the owners always have heretofore met the district councils in conference to arrange agreements, whereas on this occasion the owners have sent each union an ultimatum to take effect immediately. Indications are that unless the owners alter their attitude to the extent of allowing a conference in order to reach an amicable agreement, the result will be a stoppage ih the industry on the West Coast geiierally.
