— By Telegraph-- Copyright.)
Rec. May 15, 11 p.m. MELBOXJRNE, Saturday. The Victorian State election yesterday resulted in the complete rout of the officiai Labour Party. The voters gave an unqualified expression of confidence in the Premiers' Conference plan of rehabilitation, and in favour. of the United Australia Party candidates. The position of the pprties in the new Legislative Assembly will probably be:— United Australia Party 31 United Country Party 14 Unendorsed Labour 2 Officiai Labour 13 Independents 2 Doubtful . 4. The position of the parties at the dissolution was: — United Australia 17 United Country 14 Labour 30 Independents 4 Mr. J. W. McLachlan (Independent) won the Gippsland North seat. Labour early lost Ballarat, Dandenong, Albert Park, and Heidelberg. The Attorney-General, Mr. W. Slater is in grave danger of defeat and the Assistant-Minister for Labour, Mr. G. C. Webber's, chance of re-election is also negligible. The present indications are that Labour losses will probably number 15 seats all of which go to the United Australia Party candidates. The only one of the independents to wield important influence in the last Parliament is likely to be returned.
