Tourist Department, was given to the Council last evening by the member for the district, Mr. ( . C. H. 'Glinkard, M.P., who waited upon the meefmg. Mr. Clinkard stated that in an interviewNwith the minister for Tourist and Health Resorts— (Hon. Adam Hamilton) prior to his leaving Wellington, Miv Hamilton "had inquired whether the Council would consider taking over the water and drainage services from the Department. The Minister would shortly be visiting Rotorua, and Mr. Clinkard suggested that in view of a possible proposal the Council might take time to consider its attitude. Mr. Clinkard said that since the inception of the Council, the question of taking over the control of water and drainage had been given consideration. Just before he had left Wellington he had again approached the Minister 'of Tourist and Health Resorts re'garding water and drainage charge.s and as a result of that interview the Minister had made certain suggestions of which he considered the Council should be apprised. Mr Hamilton had pointed out that the electric light service was a paying proposition, whereas the water and drainage was not. The Minister had indieated that he was prepared to consider a reduction in electric light charges, but had indieated also that he would he persuaded further in that direction, if the Council was prepared to negotiate to take over the water and drainage. Mr. Clinkard stated that as Mr. Hamilton would shortly be visiting Rotorua, he considered that it was as well that the Council should appreciate the departmental attitude so that it could place its case before the Minister. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) thalik-, ed Mr. ciinkard for his information and said that the Council would go fully into the matter.
