OILING SYSTEM

CRANKCASE SIIOULD BE REGULARLY DRAINED. CARE IN WINTER. It is advisable to drain the crankcase oil after the first 250 miles of running. The reason for this is that even though the car is carefully run, minute particles of steel, hearing matefial, etc., have been worn off the moving parts and, as many of them are too small to be intercepted by the oil filter, they are kept in circulation and will act as abrasives. It is always advisable to drain the cranlccase when the oil is hot and agitated, because .these small particles are still in suspension and will be carried away with the lrot oil. Provided you are using the recommended grade of oil, it is subsequently only necessary to change the. engine oil every 1000 miles in summer and every 500 miles in winter, taking care to top up with new oil, if necessary, between th:se draining periods. . Becomes Diluted. In winter time, 'even the hest lubricating oil becomes diluted with petrol mainly through cxcessive use of the cholce when starting up. This dilution detracts from the lubricating value °of the oil and also causes the piston sealing to be less effective. There is also in winter a greatrr chance of water condensation in the cranlccase and the consequent possibility of sludge formation. This accounts for the difference in the draining periods between the summer and winter running. Many cars now have air cleaners, oil filters and crankcase ventilating systems as standard equipment. Whilst these accessories unquestionably do help to lessen th? impurities in the oil, they cannot entirely elimin'ate them. Regular inspection of these accessories will amply repay you. If you will take the trouble to che.ck your oil consumption you will find that your annual bill for lubricants will vary from £2 to £5, according to mileage, but the influence of correct lubrication is refiected in all the majof items of yonr running cost, such as depreciation, repairs and overhauls, which amount to many times the cost of the lubrieant.
