Happy Days Art Union Attention. is drawn to an announcement elsewliere in this'issue showingthe full lisfc of prize winners in the Happy Days Art Union, which was drawn in Wellington, on Saturday, May 7. Phenomenal Lightning Flash A motor service-driver who travelled from Tauranga to Rotorua yesterday morning said that while on the trip he saw a phenomenal flash of lightning over the hills to the west of Rotorua. The flash, which appeared as a broad pillar of light perpendicular from the ground to the clouds lasted for several seconds. Lord and Lady Bledisloe Their Excellencies, Lord and Lady Bledisloe, arrived in Rotorua yesterday by the midday train from Frankton. Their Excellencies brought thefl* own car with them, and left immediately for" Taupo where they will spend a few days trout fishing at Tokaanu. Car Turns Over A sedan motor-car travelling from Taupo to Rotorua early on Wednesday morning left the road about eight miles from Rotorua and turned over on its side. No one Was injured. It is understood that the vehicle skidded in the soft surface at the side of the road and got out of control. Spedding and Company's salvage waggon went to the' scene of the accident and put the overturned car back on its wheels. It was then able to proceed under its own power. . Winter Dances and 500 Geyser and Rebekah Lodges, I.O.O.F., Rotorua, are continuing this winter in the organisation of a series of fortnightly dances and 500 tournaments. The first of these evenings was held recently under the auspices of the Rebelcah Lodge, but the members of Geyser Lodge have now decided to assist in the organisation. The second evening of the series will be held in St. John's Hall next Tuesday night. Good prizes have been offered, both for the 500 tournament ahd various dancing competitions which will he run. Jellicoe Skooting Tropky The Jellicoe trophy which was recently won by a team from No. 5 (Rotorua) platoon, B company, 2nd Cadet Battalion, Hauraki Regiment, has not yet arrived in Rotorua and as a result, tentative aLrangements for its presentation by Colonel J. E. Duigan, D.S.O., O.C. the Northern Military Command, have had to be postponed. Colonel Duigan will, however, present the trophy on its arrival in Rotorua and a suitable occasion will be chosen for the eeremony. A suggestion has been made that in order to mark the notable achievement of the team, in winning the premie*' trophy of Dominion cadet rifle shooting, individual medals should be purchased by public subsci'iption and presented to the members. Mounted Rifles Camp The unfortunate weather conditions which have prevailed during the past few days, have interfered to some extent with the training operations of the Bay of Plenty Squadron of the Waikato Mounted Rifles, which is at present in camp at Arawa Park. Fortunately the troops have not been under canvas, but have been sleeping in the main stand, and as a result they escaped the diflicult conditions which would have attended yesterday's downpour with the men occupying tents. On Wednesday, the squadron was inspected by Colonel J. E. Duigan, D.S.O., O.C. Northern Command who expressed his complete satisfaction with the standard of efficiency of the troops. Major Court is camp commandant and Captain Ian Clachan, N.Z.S.C., is camp adjutant. Car and Yan Collide A collision occurred at about midday yesterday at the intersection of Tutanekai and Haupapa Streets, botween G. Vaughan and Co., Ltd., butchers' van driven hy Mr. Eldred Martin, and a motorcar driven hy Dr R. Dorset. No one was injured. The van was turning to the right into Haupapa Street East and the car io the right from Haupapa Street West when the collision occurred. The car was very little damaged but tae right front wheel of the van collapsed. Saturday's Football. The enthusiasm shown hy the public of Rotorua at the Rugby football matches played at Arawa Park last Saturday should be exceeded to-mor-row as some keen contests are to be staged. A hard game is promised between Rotoiti and Kahukura in the senior division and the Ngongotaha v. Waikite, and Whaka v. Hikuwai senior matches will also he keenly contested. Three junior games will also be played at Arawa Park, Kahukura v. Old Boys A., Waikite v. Whaka and Horohoro v. Rotoiti, while Ngongotaha will play Old Boys B at Ngongotaha. An added attraction will be the finish of the amateur cycle road race during the afternoon. Dalmatlon "Who's Who." A story is being told of a court case somewhere in the Auckland province in which Dalmatioiis, characteristieally named, were the dispnting parties. Counsel for one man was endeavouring to explain that his client was socially a cut ahove the others. "I don't suppose, however, that you would find his name in their 'Who's Who'?"
