Elliot, Pinancial Secretary to ;he Treasury, replying to the debate on the Finance Bill, said the aovernment would do its utmost to jo-operate with friendly nations iniide and outside the. Empire. The Government he said, had em>arked on the two great policies con;ained in the Finance Bill, dealing vith tariffs and currency and ex:hange. The exchange equalisation und would be used to deal with luctucations of the currency, but vould not be used either to inflate ir deflate the currency, or for purloses of economic war with other ountries. The sum asked for was inadequate or such purposes, but it would check uctuations and give Great Britain period of smooth water. The Bill was read the second time y 465 votes to 47 votes. A Vesolution authorising the silk uties was carried by 275 votes to 6 votes.
