It is Understood that the Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, will pay a visit to Rotorua toward the end of the month. This will be Mr. Hamilton's first visit to this centre sinee he took the portfolio. Yesterday's Heavy Rain The exceptionally heavy rain which fell in Rotorua yesterday morning came somewhat as a surprise to many residents, although such falls are to be expected at this season. For the twenty-f our hours, ended at 9 a.m. yesterday three-quarters of an inch of rain v/ere reported at the observation station in the Sanatorium Grounds, which, considering the short period of the actual downpour, was almost in the nature of a cloudburst. The barometer, for a few days previous to the fall, had heen falling steadily but yesterday moring showed a slight rise.

Monster Petition Petitions calling for the resignation of the Government, "as part of the monster petition campaign organised by the New Zealand Labour Party are at present being circulated in Rotorua and, it is understood, already carry a fair numher of signatures. Under the clause dealing with disloyalty in the civil service, recently passed through Parliament as part of the Finance Bill, it is understood that any civil servants desiring to do so, will be prevented from signing the petition. Ney/ Golf Cemrse ^Excellent progress is being made with the construction by the Tourist Department of the new golf course on Motutara Point. The grass planted last year now has a good hold and is forming a fine sole. Recently tho fairways were mown and the greens and tees marked, and shortly the tee boxes will be erected. Already the course is a popular practice ground for golfers, and some enthusiasts are even making a daily round. The greens are still a little rough, but with topdressing and rolling should be in excellent order by next season. Struclc a Good Rise Although some good bags have been taken from it in past seasons there have been very few fish taken from the Green Lake so far this year. The local anglers, however, who recently tried their luck more in a speculative spirit than anything else, had an excellent half hour's sport. They struek a very brisk rise and in a very short time landed 13 fish all around tho three and four-pound mark. Winter Forest Planting. Approximately 200 men have heen engaged by New Zealand Perpetual Forests Ltd. in preparation for the Company's winter planting programine, which will he commencing shortly. The state of the labour market 'was reflected in the large numher of applications received for employ ment, and the full requirements of the company were quickly filled. ! Fishing at Waitete. ! Fly fishing at the mouth of the Waii tete stream has heen particularly good : during the past week, and some ex- ! cellent catches have heen recorded. ! Fishing over last week-end, Mr. L, Carson oi' Auckland took a limit hag which included a 91b fish as the heaviest of the hag, while Mr. W. J. Smith, of Palmerston North, took a 10 pounder. Mr. Annan, of Waitete teefk a limit bag' averaging 2ilbs, and an Auckland angler landed a 121h brown trout: "Tilly of Blqomshury." ■ Arrangements have been completed for th'e production of the amusing farce, "Tilly of Bloomsbury," hy the Tauranga players on Friday,- May 20 at the Majestic Theatre. The produc- j tion will be under the auspiees of the Rotorua Women's Cluh and in aid of I the club's relief work fund. Unfor- j tunately, Friday, May '20 had also j been fixed by the Rotorua Lawn Ten- j nis Club as the date of their always i popular annual dance. In order to j avoid a clash, the Tennis Club has i generously postponed its dance until the following Wednesday, May 25. Fiocyded- Streets j At ahout nine o'clock yesterday j morning seetions of the streets j throughout Rotorua more resembled canals than paved roadways after an ' exceptionally heavy fall of rain which occurred shortly before that hour. In most cases this was caused by the fallen leaves from the plane trees bordering the streets blocking the floodwater drains and culverts, thus preventing the rain water from getting away. The pavements outside many of the shops in Fenton Street were completely inundated and water backed up outside the main entrance of the Grand Hotel until it extended from the steps half way across the street. Several seetions of Hinemaru Street were also flooded. The Borough Council staff was quickly on the scene clearing the blockages. In several cases the leaves had gathered so thickly in the culverts that it was necessary to use a high pressure stream of water from a hose to drxve them through. It was not long, however, before all blockages were cleared and the backed up rain water permitted to escape.
