QUESTION OF CONTROL MEMBER OF MAORI RACE SHOULD NOT BE IN CHARGE LABOUR MEMBER'S YIEWS
WELLINGTON, Monday. The opinion that the Native Affairs Department should not he under the control of a member of the native race was expressed in tlie House of Representatives to-day by Mr. R. McKeen (Labour, Wellington South), during the debate on the Finance Bill. Mr. McKeen was developing this theme when he was ruled out of order. He said that he was not reflecting on the present Minister, whom he held in the highest esteem, but he was opposed to the general principle of a memb'er of the native race being in charge of the Native Affairs Department because of the psychological question. Naturally the Minister sided with his own race, but it was imperative that the Department should be run on business-like lines. On one native land development scheme, he continued, £32,000 had been spent. Not two years ago it was valued at £11,000 and to-day he had been informed hy a valuer that it was worth no more than £7500. Mr. McKeen said his informant had told him that £1200 had been spent onpmplements which were now scatterad^ over the district. At this stage Mr. McKeen was rule'd out of order.
