Checking Spread of Roots As the roots of the large plane trees bordering the centre bowling green in the Government • grounds were found to he affeeting the edge of the green, efforts are at present being made to check them from spreading further in that direction. A trench has been dug for the full length of the green and all roots encountered were cut. Similar action is also being taken with the roots growing in the opposite direction which are said to be also affeeting the top green. Fine Bag of Fish A fine bag of fish was landed by Mr. J. Morrison, of Rotorua, during the week-end. On one day using the fly in Lake Okataina Mr. Morrison took eight good eonditioned trout two of which were eight pounders and the heaviest a fourteen pound fish. The catch averaged seven pounds. "Transport Control In N.Z." Taldng as his subjeet, "Transport Control in New Zealand," Mr. P. A. Kusabs gave an interesting address at the weekly luncheon of the Rotorua Rotary Club yesterday. After outlining the effect the new regulations had on the various motor services and the aims of the Transport Act, also making a brief comparison of its chanees of success in this eountry as compared with the more densely populated countries, Mr. Kusabs concluded .with a few humorous reminiscences of motoring in the early days in the Rotorua district. At the conclusion, he was thanked on behalf ■of the other club members by Mr. M. H. Hampson, who also added a few remarks as to the likely effect the regulations would have in their attempt to force the public to use the railways. Repairing Bowling Greens Considerable work is at present in progress in the Government Gardens in repairing the damage done to the bowling greens during last summer's play. The top green has had the ends resown and topdressed and already the new grass is coming away nicely. The bottom green has had the ends returfed and the whole area heavily topdressed. The centre green has not yet been touched, but preparations are in progress for returfing all the worn seetions. Winter Bowling Facilitiea As the result of a deputation from the Rotorua Bowling Club to Mr. L. J. Bayf eild, district manager of the Tourist Department, for the provision of winter bowling facilities, preparations are in progress in the Government grounds to provide an area where winter games may be played. The croquet lawn near the cenotaph is at present being sstripped of turf and will ultimately be levelled and resown to provide four bowling rinks. In the summer the area will still be used as a croquet lawn. The green will not be ready for this winter, but will be permanently available froni next year onward. Mothers' Day Service Over 50 mothers and upwards -of 70' kiddies attended a special Mothers' Day service at Devon Street Sunday School on Sunday. The superintendent, Mr. W. A. Carter, in a brief address, stressed the value of the Fifth Commandment, and also addressed a few words to the mothers, taking as his text the well-known quotation, "The hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world." Mr. Carter briefly stressed the tremencous value of a proper upbringing in moulding the eharacter of coming generations. Appropriate. hymns were sung, and after the service, the ladies served afternoon tea in the social room. Presentation to Constable Rotorua members of the police force last evening made a presentation to one of their members, Constable A. D. Brown, on the occasion of his recent marriage. Constable Brown during the time he has been stationed in Rotorua has made many friends, and the good wishes extended to him by Senior-Sergeant Carroll in making the presentation, will be emphasised by them. The seniorsergeant briefy wished Constable Brown every happiness and prosperity in his married life, and tendered him the congratulations of his fellow officers. Constable Brown suitably replied, thanking the senior-sergeant for his good wishes and the unexpeeted gift which had accompanxed it. Members of the staff of the Magistrate's Court. also extended their congratulations to Constable Brown, through the senior-sergeant. Rotary Conference Over one hundred Rotarians will visit Dunedin this week for the tenth .annual conference of the Rotary Clubs of New Zealand. A comprehensive business and social progxamme has been arranged for the three days of the conference, and a very wide field will he eovered. Mr. Sydney W. Pascall, president of the Rotary International, will attend the meetings and addresses will be given by Sir Alexander Roberts (Wellington), Messrs Harry Guthrie (district governor), James Hogg (Dunedin), F. Ambler (Auckland), C. E. Jones (Christchurch), W. Thomas (Timaru), and Frank Milner (Oamaru). The majority of the delegates will arrive in Dunedin to-day and will spend Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the conference.
