AMATEUR CYCLING
NGONGOTAHA TO ARAWA PARE ROAD RACE TO BE HELD NEXT SATURDAY CHOSEN The -winter programme of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club will commence on Saturday next, May 14, with a road cycle race from Ngongo.taha to Rotorua. From the starting point chosen, the Ngongotaha Football Ground, the course will be via the Cambridge-Rotorua main highway, and the Old Taupo Road to Malfroy Road, from where the cyclists will turn into Rano^f Street and Grey Street finishing inside the Arawa Parlc gates. During the winter months, road cycling is a very popular sport in many towns in New Zealand and several annual races over long distances are held. The Palmerston North to Wellington annual race over a distance of nearly 100 miles is a very popular event and generally commands a large entry, as also does the Christchurch to Timaru fixture. It is the intention of the Rotorua Club to hold several following races, the distance in each successive event being increased, eventually finishing, it is hoped, with a combined race for Waikato and Rotorua cyclists from Hamilton to Rotorua. The generally good nature of the roads in the district provides many likely courses over which road races may he held and it is considered that a most successful season should eventuate. The races are open to all amateur cyclists who are or intend joining the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club as members. Entries for ! the first race on Saturday next close with the Hon. Secretary (Mr. C .J. Casey) on Tuesday, May 10, at 5 p.m. The entry fee is sixpence. Handicaps for the first race will be "sealed."
