LACK OF COURTESY discarding of members of legislative council NO RE-APPOINTMENTS
" WELLINGTON, Friday. "We are separating to-day from nine of our colleagues, and I feel that I must thank each of those hori--ourable gentlemen -for the ser-viceSL. they have given t'o the country," said the Leader of the Legislative Council, Sir James Parr, to-day in'Teferring to the termination of the terms of office in the Council of Sir John Sinelair (Otago) (25 years), Hon. E'.' W. Alison (Auckland), Hon. G. J-. Garland (Auckland), Hon. H. Triggs (Canterbury), Hon. J. B. Gow (Auckland), Hon. W. Stewart (Auckland), Hon. D. T. Fleming (Southland),' Hon. G. M. Thompson (Otago) and Hon. A. F. Hawke (Southland) each fourteen years. "I support what has already beeri said by the Leader of the Council,'.* said Sir William Hall Jones, "I think the Government might have had the courtesy to let these members know what was coming during this session.We have made many preeedents, but that is a precedent I hope will not occur again. These men, all dear friends of mine, have devoted theif whole time to the welfare of New Zealand, and they are being throwii on one side like a wet rag." Retiring members briefly returned thanks. • The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G.'W.' Forbes, announced this afternoon that it is not proposed to make any appointments or reappointments : to the Legislative Council in the meantime. Asked if further appointments were contemplated, Mr. Forbes said' tbat that would be considefed later. There are now twenty-five members of the Council and three of them, Sir Heaten Rhodes, Hon. L. M. Isitt, and Hon. G. Witty, are due to retire iii October.
