NAPIER, Friday. Last night's shhke lasted aboiit a quarter of £ mmtite, £nd was foiloWed by many tremots and one fa'iiljr hbavy shake before midmghf. Sdme chimneys were brought down at Napier an'd crockery'in soWpla'ces stlff erqd, but the t djimage was neither seriou's nor extensive; Mbst people ra'n outdb'ors. The loss of light for 20 minutes made conclitions kppear worse. Tfie restoration of the light, howbver, cfeated much ■cbnfidence. Outside the loss of a few chimneys the material loss was very small. Although the electric light.was cut out the ghs (BUpplj) was maintained at normal. Tlie Water and sewer systems Were not damaged; but a f e^v i elepEbnes' were , disconnected. All work was resumed this morning.
