Native Small Holdings

In furtherance of the recent scheme for Maori small settlements outlined hy Mr R. II. Dansey and approved hy the Rotorua Unemployment Committee, a meeting was held at Ohinemutu during the week when Mr. Dansey explained the scheme to a gathering of the Ngati Whakane. The proposals were well received and a suh-comniit-tee was set up to discuss, suitable properties for sub-division and make preliminary arrangements for seciinng possession. Under Mr. Dansey's scheme it is proposed to establish a number of the families of native un ;mployed on small holdings whiea will be cultivated for ihe production of vegetables and small fruits. Rutherford Arms. Lord Rutherford's arms are interesting in that New Zealand arid science are both incorporated. There is a kiwi on the top of a crest, the supporters of the shield heing a Maori on the right and Harmes Trismegis.tus, the God or Patron of Alchemy, on the left. The motto is a quotation from Lucretius' talk on "The Nature of Things" — "Primordia Rerum Quaerere." The shape of the shield represents rather cleverly the peculiar shape of the decay and re-l covery cruves of radio-active bodies? discovered hy Rutherford in 1903 and used hy him as a basis of his disintegration theory.
