CHRISTCHURCH, last night. : i A meeting -;o-f . thje morning shift of the, tramway men was held to-night, at whifh the n,egotiations conducted during .the day between Board and the Union Were'discussed. " '* The only statement obtainable after the meeting was that the strike was definitely on. The men stated . that members of the union were strongly against acceptanee of the board's terms and in favour. of a . strike. So far as they knew only two members of the union had refused to join in the strike. The board has made arrangements to run a modified service to-morrow. The extent of the service will depend on the number of present employees to report for duty, and as to this number the board is quite in the dark. The boai'd has received 400 applica- ' tions for employment on the trams, including some verjr experienced ■ tramway men from Auckland and Wellington. A substantial number • of these men were enrolled to-night,: and ordered to . report to-morrow. j The service to-morrow will termin- , ate at 4.45 p.m. and there will-be no' trams running after dark. In spite of Superintendent Cum-I mings' warning that the police willi not tolei'ate picketing, -it is known: that attempts at picketing will be] made to-morrow morning. In anticipation of frouble of thissort, Superintendent Cummings has! trained for early morning duty a; fairly strong body of special police.
