FLOWER SHOW

BRIGHT AND YARIED EVENING PROGRAMME EXTRACTS FROM OPERETTA To mark the close of a very suecessful Chrysanthemum Show held by the St. Luke's Anglican Church, on Friday, a most enjoyable programme was presented in the Church hall in the evening to a large and appreeiative audience. The first half of the programme was entirely devoted to the staging of excerpts from the muscal operetta "Princess Chrysan- |. themum," and special credit is due to Mrs. A. Rowe, who trained all the small people who took part in the evening's programme.

Pretty dresses, dainty dances and charming musical numbers all combined to make the evening a marked success, and the stage decorations of cherry blossom, together with gay Chinese lanterns added individuality aiid charm to a picturesqu© eastern setting for the operetta. The programme opened with a bright chorus of lads and maidens in lcimonos and pyjamas breaking into-a processional tune to herald the approaeh of the Emperor of Japan (Mr. Thomas), who convinced his audience of his title by a spirited rendering of "I am the Emperor." A tap danee by a bevy of five maidens dressed in characteristic eastern attire followed, and a vocal description of "Lullaby Land" sounded most charming and inviting to the audience. Bertram Waite in his song "Down by the Swift Flowing River," wds distinctly successful, the lilting melody being reinforced by a chorus in the background. After a graceful ballet reminiscent of the folk dances of other days, Miss Joyce Mason with her chorus sweetly sang "Home of My Childhood Days." A sailors' hornpipe danced to a vocal accompaniment, which was executed with great deftness and precision by Miss Joan Urquhart, hrough to a close the first half of the programme. A song by Miss K. Hall terminated, the few minutes' interval, her item being greatly appreciated hy all present. A vocal duet by Miss R. Owens and Mr Thomas followed, their voices blending in very sweet harmony. An elocutionary number "by Miss Jean Clegg "Castles in the Air," set | many thinking of their own particular "castles." Miss Clegg responded to a recall witli a short humorous : item. Songs hy Mr. Thomas and Mr. Dauheny hrought the entertaimnent to a j finale and after a few words of thanfc j hy the Rev. Mr. Corbin to all those j who had assisted in making the even- |, ing such a success the concert closei j with the singing of the National An | them.
