FISHING REPORTS

ROTORUA AND TAUPO FISH MAINTAINING HIGH ' AVERAGE CONDITION IN DISTRICT HEAVY BAGS TAKEN The following are the fortnightly fishing reports for the Rotorua arid Taupo districts, prepared by the conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean) : — Throughout the distriet, according to the reports to hand, the fish taken showed an increase in weight and were all in good condition. Fish - were now starting to run into the Ohau Channel, where fish in excellent condition were caught. For size and condition, the fish taken from Rotoiti were now definitely on a par with the Taupo fish.' Catches during the period were recordcd as foliows: Rotorua Messrs. Duffy and Kitchen spoon fishing in Lake Rotorua for one day secured a nice bag of 26 fish averaging 211bs., with the heaviest 41hSi At Ngongotaha, Mr. Bariies, usittg the spoon, tooh 12 fish averagiiig 31bs., heaviest 41bs., during a weekend's fishing. At the Waiteti catches on the fly of good fish averaging up to 41bs. in weight were taken by: Mr. Annan (14), one morning; Mr. Dick (9), one day; Mr. Kerr (3), one evening. Mr. Barclay, dui'ing one week-end, took 13 fish, avei-age 51bs., heaviest 8lbs., at the Channel. One rod took four fish, average 61bs., heaviest 8lbs., during a few hoiirs night fishing in the Channel. Mr. Poyes took 12 fish aVferaging 51bs., heaviest 61bs., in the Channel during orie day, and on one other occasion 8 averaging 61bs., with the largest 8^1bs. Mr. Bert Lowry secnred a limit catch jn Lake Rotoiti. Dr. Marshall obfained a bag of 14 during one day's fishing at the Channel. W. Kusabs, fishing one evening, secured 12 fish, the heaviest of which weighed lljUbs. Mr. C. Bowman (Hawera) obtained a nice bag of 10 fish, including a 7£lb. fish, in the Channel. Mr. J. W. Cochrane, who has been rewarded with consistently good results in the Channel, took a bag of 7 fish, average 3 lbs., heaviest 51bs., during va few hours' fishing. Mr. Turner, during a week's fishing in Rotoiti, secured 28 fish averaging 51bs. in weight. Mr. S. Tamutahi, at the Channel, obtained a bag of 6 fish, averaging 41bs., with the largest fish 7lbs. Messrs. Leonard and Smith, of Te Aroha, did one day's fishing at Lake Rerewhakaitu and secured, on the spoon, 12 fish averaging 31bs., with the largest 61bs., but the fish were reported as in only fair condition. Lake Tarawera Conditions were improved during the period at Lake Tarawera, where some good bags were taken. Messrs. Butt aiid Martin fly-fished the lake for half a day and took 16 fish, average 4!lbs., heaviest 7lbs. On another occasion they took 20, averaging 51bs. Mr. Adolph, who takes some good bags from this lake each season, secured, during one evening, a nice bag of 9 fish, averaging 41bs., with the largest 61bs. Fish taken from the various rivers in the Whakatane and Opotiki distriet are again reported in good condition, and the report also indicates that the average weight of the fish has appreciably increased. One catch of 14 fish taken from the Tarawera River on the inanga by Mr. C. A. Timbs avei'aged 61bs. Fish from several bags taken in this river averagCd 41b s. and over. Details of catches are as follow: — T. Dockray, 15; W. Meare, 13; J. Peebles, 13; W. Addison, 12; Dr. Annett, 11; R. Campbell, 11; B. Mitchdll, 10. Other minor catches were: — A. Donaldson (9), W. Mortenson (8), ; H. Mitchell (7), J. Kearns (5), T. Ricord (4), J. Bennett (4), F. Lord (3), J. Adams (3), H. McGregor (3), L. Parkinson (2), R. Butler (2), J. Peebles (2), R. Carruthers (2), R. McDowell (1), L. Cafruthers (1). Mr. Hector Gray, who was camped at Rotokawa, at the time of the report, was averaging 8 to 9 fish per day on the Waikato River. In the same locality, Mr. Fulljames, using the dry fly one evening secured 10 fish, average 3lbs., heaviest 511bs.^ Though few anglers are operating. at present in the Waikaremoana, some fairly good-conditioned fish are being taken, especially in the Hopuruahine Stream, where at the mouth, fish were to- be seen in large numbers. The last few days have seen six nice 81bs. fish taken from Waikareiti, also one 12^1b. fish from the same lake. Taupo Catches Taupo weather coiiditions, during the period were favourable, but generally spealcing, fishing was rather difficult, but notwithstanding the fact some good catches were reported. Fish are reported to have commenced to gather at the mouths of the streams, but no "run" of any importance has yet thlcen place.' The Tongariro River fished somewhat disappointingly. There were a lot of fish in the river, but they were not talcing partieularly well except at night, when several anglers had been getting very good catches, One party of two rods took 70 fish, heaviest 9Jlbs., in five days. Two rods took their limit ih Grace's Pool and lower reaches on two successive nights. These fish averaged over 61bs. Two rods took 42 fish in two nights. In this total Were several good specimens of brown trout, the largest 12ilbs., and a rainbow weighing lOJlbs. Anglers at the Delta Camp were doing well, and several limits were talcen.. Most rods took from 3 to 8 fish per day. Trolling parties were not doing so well, as the fish. were getting round the mouths and running up stream. The Tauranga-Taupo mouth was fishing well, with a good quantity of fish in the stream. Motutere and Jellicoe Poihts had not been much fished lately, one angler fishing these points averaging 5 or 6 fish per day. At Hatepe, one rod fishing up stream, took 6 fish, the largest lOlbs. The stream had not been much fished. The Outlet was fishing fairly well, „ The Waitahanui was fishing fairly well. A iiumber of fish were taken out of the river, especially in the evening and eaiiy morriing. One well-ktiown fisherman averagod about

30 fish per week fishing about five hours a day. Two rods took 12 fish between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., the largest fish weighing lOlbs. Another angler secured fiye and again the following day took 11 fish averaging 51bs., the heaviest 751bs. Similar catches were taken when the outlet was fishable. Three and Four-Mile Bays . were fishing fairly well. One angler took three fish weighing 201bs., all in splfendid condition, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Huka streteh was quiet. However, one angler camped there for 10 days took 115 fish, averaging 3Ubs., and another local rod averaged three to four fish a day. Launch Catches The launches had been quiet for the past week. Two rods took 40 fish in a day and a-half, including one 101b. and two 91b. fish, and another party of three rods took 41 fish, all fly-fishing. Other catches ranged from 15 upwards. Row-boat parties trolling in Taupo bays had been rather disappointed. No good catches during the past wefelc were recorded. The following catches in the Taupo area were recorded: — Messrs. Thorpe and Rumbolt in the launch Wizbang took 40 fish, averagaing' 541bs. on the fly during one and a-half dhys at' Whangamata and bay; one lOlbs. and two 91b. were included in this total. Messrs. Barker and Gillespie and party (three rods) took 41 from "Tainui." 0 In the Sunbeam Messrs. Kerr, Smiley and party obtained a bag of 28 good fish, using the fly at Whangamata. Messrs. Sweetapple and McDougal, in the launch Tamati, obtained 21 fish, using the fly, during one day. Other launch catches of fish all taken on the fly were :; — Lapwing : Hope and party, 17 fish, averaging 4|lhs. Dawn: Smiley and party, 16 fish, averaging 5lbs. Tainui: Perry and Newdich, 15 fish, averaging 51bs. Mr. Branson, fishing the Waitahanui River and Outlet, averaged 30 fish per week, fishing "easily" from li a.m. till about 5 p.m., daily. Mr. Welsh, who camped for 10 days at Huka, took 115 fish, averaging 3£lbs. The fishing in the Tokaanu area, although perhaps* a little patchy, had been very good, especially so with all river fishing. Some gbod catches with some very fine fish had been taken. The Delta and mouths of the Tongariro were fishing very well at all times. The spoon area in Upper Tongariro had not been fished to any great extent, nevertheless some good fishing had been had in that locality. Rivers were all still low.
