PLAN FOR OTTAWA SECRET SCHEME PREPARED TO BENEFIT EMPIRE PRODUCERS . PREFERENCE IN BRITAIN

Rec. April 28, 9.0 p.m. LONDON, Thursday. According to the Daily Herald a scheme is heing secretly prepared for suhmission to the Imperial Economio Conference at Ottawa. The ultimate object is to create an Empire monopoly of the British meat market. This means tafiff preferences. The Herald says that a manifesto signed by representatives of the British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian meat interests has beeri approved of hy the National Union of Farmers; hut is being suspended momentarily owing to the reluctance of certain British interests to put their names to the scheme, which includes fresh, frozen and chilled heef, mutton, pork, lamb, bacon, ham and yeal. It is suggested that imports will' be regulated according to the seasonal requirements of the British markets. The Herald edrtorially condemns the scheme, which it says, is bound to raise prices- and would only lead to reprisals hy the Argentine and Denmark.
