LEASING OF SECTIONS AT WAIKAREMOANA SUPPORTED SUGGESTION FROM WAIROA The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce held a general meeting in the Dolly Varden on Friday evening. Mr. S. J. Hale occupied the chair, and others present were: Messrs. J. M. Roberts, A. Smith, L. Ewert, J. Macdowell, H. C. Krogh, H. Langguth, E. T. Harris and Wm. Ashton (secretary). A report on the work done by the Associated Chambers of Commerce in connection with recommendations to the Economy Commission was received and discussed. A remit was received from the Wairoa Chamber in connection with certain cottage leases which it desired that the Government should make available to the public on a cleared section of land on the shores of Lake Waikaremoana, the area to be leased in sections for holiday and fishing cottages.
As there was no bush on the area, the remit stated, no question was involved of interf erence with the scenic attractions of the locality. The area was the 'only one available on which buildings could be erected. The Wairoa Chamber asked for the Rotorua Chamber's support in its endeavour to induce the Government to make the area available. Objections Raised One other chamber had opposed the remit, its main objections being that it would he in competition with the Government Hostel, and that campers would destroy the bush when -in search of firewood. It was also added that the proposal would accentuate the fire risk, endangering the forest reservation. After some discussion it was d-e-cided to support the remit for the reason that manjt people preferred camping to str.ying in the hostel. Also, ihe chamber was desirous of popularising the route to Waikaremoana. It was also pointed out that the bush in this area would be little endangered hy fire as it was so green that it practically would not burn. A letter to this effect is to be sent to the Wairoa Chamber, hut adding the proviso that the sections leased should not obstruct the public use of any of the lake frontage. Employment of Youths A circular from the Dunedin Chamber outlining a scfreme for the emnloyment and assistance of young neonle on lpaving school was read. After some discussion as to whether the proposals would interfere with the' scheme at present under consideration, embracing land settlement in . the Rotorua district, it was decided : that the Dunedin Chamber be noti- '
