VOTING BY RATEPAYERS IN ARREARS WITH PAYMENTS PROPOSED BILL OUTLINED
WELLINGTON, Saturday. The pronnsed legislation temporarily restor'ng voting rights to d-a-i'aulting ratepayers in counties will be submittad to the House of Represencatives when members reassemble next week. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. A. Hamilton, stated to-day that a number of inquiries had been received as to the scope of the leg slation, and to, clear up any misapprehension that may have arisen, he , wished to make it quite clear that its effect would be that ratepayers who had themselves paid their rates in full up to March 31, 1930, would be eligible to nominate candidates for the forthcoming county elections; to be nominated as candidates therefor, or to vote thereat, even though they were defaulters in regard to rat;s levied since that date. Mr. Hamilton said that he had arranged for county clerks and returning officars to be advised fully of the posit'on should Parliament agree i:o che proposed amendment of the Act. The legislation would also apply to electric power board elections, and all other elections affeeted by the.disqualification provisions.
