HOCKEY HAPPENINGS
"Sticks")
prospects of successful Season appear bright NEW CLUBS FORMING
(Notes by
In anticipation of the early comttiettcement ,of the ladies' liockey season in Rotorua, an enthusiastic interest in the game is in evidence among players, intending players and supporters. It is anticipated that teams will, with a few exceptions, comprise the same players as last season, while in at least one cast it is hoped that two teams will he fielded by one club. In a town the size of Rotorua there should be plenty of scope for enlisting the services of eiiough players to form at least one more town team or club. Clubs have been circnlarised for information respecting the possibility of entering junior teams, and in this way it is hoped to increase the membership and strength of the association, and provide a training gronnd for the senior grade. Club secretaries are required to ejiter their teams with the secretary of the association (Mr. C. J. Casey) not later than to-morrow. Teams and Players Q Efforts are being made to re-form the Shamrock team, which a year or so ago delighted hoelcey enthusiasts with their consistently good stickwork and provided many players for Rotorua representative teams. Those responsible for this effort are to be commended. Whippets are heavy losers of prominent players since the last season, Misses Knox, Longworth and Fisk all having left the town. These three were some of the mainstays of the town team and their places will be hard to fill. M. Black, the Whippet's popular skipper, is still on hand, but it is doubtful whether she will be playing regularly. Players who will he taking the field include Mrs. E. Bettridge (nee Whitley), Misses L. Morton, J. Stonehouse, J. McKibbon, G. Dodson, N. Smith, J. Cottrell, T. Price, M. Bell and possibly E. Corbett. Should the Shamrock Club re-form, E. Mitchell will probably transfer to that team. Despite the fact that Taniwha will possibly be losing several players, including T. Mitchell, M. Mitchell and J. Chaytor, who will play for Shamrock if the club is formed, plenty of talent should be available to field a Strong side to defend the Wairau-a-Rangi Cup won 'by the club last season. Very little can he reported ahout the conntry clubs as yet, with the exception that great interest is being shown at Mamaku. The losses of this team include Mrs. Pattle, who will shortly be leaving the district for Otahuhu, and Miss A. Bishop, an unfortunate accident having made her unavailable. It is hoped that she will recover sufl'ci ntly at an eariy date to take her accustomed place in the team. Arawa should field practically the same team as last year, it being stated that if J. Chaytor does not join up with Shamrock, Arawa may secure her services. It is understood that the annual meeting of the Ngongotaha Club was to be held last night, and it is not anticipated that any difficulty will he encountered by this club in entering a team. The departure of Miss L. Gray from Rotorua will he a great loss to Ngongotaha, and also to the Association. Interest will centre in the first appearance of a new club from Mourea and as it is understood that one or two players who have at different times represented Rotorua will be included in the team, some interesting games should result. Dominion Tournament The Wairarapa Association has forwarded a remit to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women's Association suggesting that for this year a North and South Tournament he heid in place of the usual tourney which, being held in the Noi'th Island last year, should this year be g-ranted to the South. In view of the difficulty which is bound to effect all associations this season, the reason for this remit is quite obvious, and should meet with favour by most associations.
