LOCAL AND GENERAL

\ v Bank Holidays To-morrow (April 28), is St. George's Day and will be observed by the banks in Rotorua as a holiday. As Monday next, April 25, is Anzac Day, which is a statutory holiday, it should be noted by business people and others with banking business to transact that all banks will be closed from 3 p.m. to-day until Tnesday morning. No "Post" on Anzac Day Monday next, Aprii 25, being Anzac Day, the "Morning Post'" will not be published. For the convenience of advertisers the office will be open on Monday evening between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Accident in Fog While driving thro'ugh a thiek fog on the Taupo Road late on Monday night, Mr. M. Doyle, of Waiotapu, got off the road and ran h's car over a low bank. The machine was slightly damaged, but was later towed back on to the road and was able to proceed, Mr. Doyle was not injured. Snags Removed Officers of the Internal Affairs Department, have recently been engaged in removing a number of troublesome snags and stumps from the inlet to the Green Lake. This is a favourite fishing location with many anglers, and the removal of these snags should considerably improve this pieee of water. So far this season, the Green Lake has not been fishing particularly well and has received very little attention, but during the last month of the season, it is expected to yield good resnlts. Pheasants Liherated In preparation for the shooting season approximately 250 pheasants have already been liherated in the Rotorua district by officers of the Internal Affairs Department, while further liherations will be carried out in the Opotiki district at an early date. This season, however, following representations by the Opotiki Rod and Gun Cluh, the Opotiki district will be closed to shooting. District Fishing Fishing at Tarewera during the week, Messrs. Butt and Martin, of Rotorua took 16 good conditioned fish on the fiy. The average of the bag was over 4ilbs, and the heaviest fish weighed 71bs. Another good bag taken by Rotorua anglers was secured at Waitahanui by Messrs. A. Carruthers and P. J. Sherriff who took 12 fish for a morning with the rods. The heaviest fish of this catch was 8§lbs. and the average was 61bs. Fishing in the Ohau Channel has consistently been good and anglers report the fish as being- in excellent condition. Both at the Rotorua and Rotoiti ends rods have been operating in the mornings and evenings. Shooting Season A number of shooting licenses have already been issued in prepartion for the shooting season which opens on May 1, and sportsmen generally are preparing for the fray. In some of. the more popular areas of the Taupo district, sportsmen are already pegging out their claims and making their preparations. Taupo Angling. Althoug-li it was anticipated that as a result of the heavy rains of last week, there would be a run of fish from tbe lake waters into the streams, the run was small and disappointing so far as its results to anglers were concern.ed. The Conservator of Fish and Game, (Mr. A. Kean) who has recetly returned from a visit to Taupo and Tokaanu, reports that angling- has been slow in that district during f the past few days, but it is anticipated that conditions, particularly in the Tongariro, will improve. Unemployed Increase. Rotorua unemployed registrations during the week have taken a distinct upward tendency and the lists which will be released to-day will reveal a marked increase. This is due to tbe fact that a number of men recently discharged from various Public W.orks undertakings in the district have now registered, while men who have been dispensed with at Ngakuru have also joined the ranks. Tramping the Roads. The unemployment position in the country is having its reflex in the number of men on the move at present. Rotorua particularly is the centre for men tramping the roads in search of work and during the past few months, increasing calls have been made upon the doss-house accomodation in the town. The doss-house was opened in July last and since the middle of that month nearly 450 men have been given meals and accomodation. All men applying for accomodation are referred to the police, who register their names and direct them to the hous?. Seventy-five per cent. of the men are young fellows of good stamp, and the great majority of the applicants are genuinely endeavouring to obtain work and better their condition. Civil Service Cuts. The Government is apparently confident of the passage of the Financial Expenditure Adjustment Bill at present before Parliament, for it is understood that instructions have already been given for the imposition of the civil service salary cuts proposed under the Bill. The reductions will take effect from the next payday in the various departments of the service, and all civil servants, on that date, will also be required to contribute in a lump sum tbe amount of the reduction during the past month. The Bill is designed to impose the cuts as from April 1, and the amount of the reductions over the period already passed will be retrospeetive.
