WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The death has occurred of Dr. H. T. Ferrar, of the New Zealand Geological Survey. Dr. Ferrar, who was born in Ire-t land, spent his early life in South Africa. He was geologist to Captain Scott's first expedition to the Antarctic, where he spent over two years. In 1905 he was appointed to the geological section of the Survey Department in Egypt. At the time of the outbreak of the Great War he was a master at Christ's College, Christchurch, and joined the Expeditionary Forces, srving in Egypt and and PaL estine. In 1919 he joined the staff of the New Zealand Geological Survey, and he has bestowed great service : on the Dominion, partieularly in regard to soils. The New Zealand University this year conferred the degree of Doctor : of Science on him. He was a FelloW of the Geological Society, London, member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; and' a life member of the New Zealand lnstitute.
