SHEEP KILLED

lorry crashes into moe on the taupo road UNUSUAL ACCIDENT An unusual accident occurred on the Taupo road last evening shortly after six o'clock, when a heavy lorry dashed into a mob of sheep with disastrous results. Eleven sheep were killed or had to be destroyed ahd th'O lorry capsized in the middle of the frightened mob. The accident occurred in a straight stretch of r.oad and the cause of the accident is unr known. The mob was being driven by Mr. R. Williamson, manager on Mr. Johfi Faloona's property at Rerewhakaitu, and was about 540 in number. Mr. Williamson, who was assisted by a drover, Mr. L. Hancock, was riding in the middle of the mob when the lorry suddenly crashed into the leaders. The lights of the machine apparently dazzled the sheep and the mob was thrown into confusion. The driver of the lorry, Mr. Tangi Reihana, was thrown clear and was nqt injured although the machine was •damaged. The mob was being driven to Rotorua and had been delayed on. the road. It was just about to be turned into a grazing paddock for the night when the accident occurred. The lorry is said to have been trayelling at a speed of between 30 and _ 40 m.p.h. as it approached the flopjc • and skidded some distance after the impact with fhe leaders. It was latqr put back on its wheels by Spedding and Co's salvage waggon and drfyen into Rotorua under its own power."
