COST OF TRAVEL
TENDENCY FOR PEOPLE TO ENLARGE ON MONEY SPENT. "The cost of travel is often greatly exaggerated, and there is a tendency for people to enlarge on the money they spend," said Mr. Marcus Marks in addressing a luncheon of the Wellington Travel Men's League at the Grand Hotel on observations during his tour in Europe last year. Mr. Marks added that many people denied themselves the pleasure of travel because they were discouraged by the expense accounts quoted by their friends. Travel was not unattainable to a considerable section of the community if people would be content with the same comforts that they enjoyed in their homes. People who lived in a modest way often became very lavish and expected much when travelling. Mr. Marks said that a man who was accustomed to live within an income of £500 a year should be able to travel for a year for £1000. He believed that the organisation of travel and the establishment of extensive travel agencies had done much to bring down the cost of foreign touring. One should not be too particuiar in European countries"' said Mr, Marks. "If you want to be economical, drink what your neighbours are drinking and eat what they eat. If you ask for whisky in Franee it will cost you three times what it is worth. When you are offered a frog's shoulder you might as well keep quiet and eat it. It will not hurt you, and you will only j meet expense if you begin worrying about getting plenty of calories. Methuselah never worried what was on his plate." An optimistie view of the future was voiced by Mr. Harley E. Pippin, passenger traffic manager for the Matson Line in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. "We are gong through a slow period, but the urge to travel is not dead," he said. "Everybody connected with travel promotion must strive to give more service at a reasonable price, and there will soon be a rush for travel," he concluded.
