FOOLISH RUMOURS
ALLEGED INTENTION TO TAKE DIRECT ACTION DENIED ROTORUA RELIEF WORKERS Rumours were rife in Rotorua on Saturday afternoon and evening suggesting that the unemployed in Rotorua contemplated calling a strike, or even creating a riot, in the town. Such reports are, at the best, extremely foolish, and sliow a complete misapprehension of the eources of the trouble in Auckland. At the worst, they are most unfair to a body of citizens whose only crime is that they have been unfortunate enough to suffer the loss of their employment as a result of th6 depression. Below we publish a letter from the executive officers of the Rotorua Relief Workers' Association which makes the attitude of the local unemployed perfectly clear. (To the Editor) Sir, — May I, through your columns, refute the ridiculous rumours that appear to be rife in Rotorua. I refer to the foolish statements circulated by unthinking individuals in regard to the Rotorua relief worlcers' intentions of striking or rioting. Our association, sir, has always taken up the attitude that more can be gained hy constitutional metliods than by direct action. This contention has heen pxoved by the results obtained from our recent demonstration and deputation to Mr. Jackson, in his capacity of chairman of the Local Unemployment Committee. These rumours are- harmful to an association which exists solely to benefit its members, without in any way harming anybody else. Hoping that this will ^illay the fears, should any exist, in the minds of the townspeople. We are, etc., (Sgd.) R. CARNACHAN, President, (Sgd.) H. DANIELS, Secretary, Rotorua Relief Workers' Assn. Rotorua, April 16, 1932.
