MOHAKA MASSACRE
Last Sunday was the sixty-third anniversary of the massacre of Euro-r peans and Maoris at Mohaka, by a j raiding party of Hauhaus under Te ' Kooti Rikirangl, lyiho had escapjed from the Chatham Islands. Thfe party came tlown the Mangaturanga valley, where they killed two natives and some children at Lavindale. Mr. Lavin and his wife were also killed that day, but not hy Te Kooti. Mr. Lavin ahd' h'is wif e, afte'r se'eing their three bdys killed by the deadly tomahawk, fled into the scruh, where later both were, found dead, Mr. Lavin with his :arm round his wife's wa,ist and a discharged' revolver in his right ( hand. The raiders" then swept down the , valley, takihg oiie of the. pas hy treachery and killing most of the iiimates.
